Tree Operations

Tree Removal & Associated Operations

Whilst it is desirable to retain and enhance existing trees, sometimes this is just not possible. Our team are experienced in all aspects of tree removal, from the very smallest of amenity tree, to dismantling very large mature trees in confined spaces, to clear-felling operations in a forestry situation. Whatever your tree felling requirements be it:

  • Big or small

  • Crane work and rigging

  • Shelterbelt removal

  • Orchard removal

  • Dismantling in confined areas

  • Machine assisted back-pulling

call us - we can help.

Stump Grinding

We offer a complete stump grinding service that grinds the stump to 300mm below ground level. Unless reinstatement is required, the grindings are raked into a mound and left to settle.

Reinstatement
The stump ground area can be re-grassed or hard filled. We dig out and remove the grindings, replace them with topsoil and grass seed, or hard-fill with metal and compact level.

Tree Planting and Establishment
Using our Kanga with a 750mm auger attachment makes easy work of tree planting pits and also with the transportation and handling of delicate trees. Once planted mulch can be added to aid with water retention and weed suppression. Trees are regularly revisited when planted by Greenscene to monitor and ensure establishment.

Transplanting
Using our Hiab we are capable of transplanting trees and palms with a root mass up to 3 ton. This includes most trees under 5m in height. Tree transplanting can be an expensive option and not always guaranteed to succeed. Prior consultation with our expert team will provide you with sound and practical options.
Tree Pruning

Formative Pruning

Generally carried out on young trees up to 5m in height, with the objective of developing a tree into a well-shaped and balanced specimen. Formative pruning must be done in accordance with the nature of the tree. Weak, crossing, or dead branches will be removed and a singular leader/stem will be developed where appropriate. On certain species the crown may be thinned or lifted.

General Prune

This is our most popular and most recommended service. It includes the removal of crossing/rubbing and diseased limbs, deadwood, broken/snapped branches and stubs, epicormic and basal growth. It also includes a general tidy.

Crown Thinning

This is usually undertaken on trees in close proximity to and/or shading buildings. Thinning by carefully removing selected branches allows more natural light through the tree canopy whilst still maintaining the trees natural shape and form.

Crown Lifting

By carefully removing lower secondary branches and (if necessary) lower laterals, the canopy can be raised or lifted to a desired height. This is most commonly required to remove obstructions to pedestrian paths or vehicular traffic, or to allow light under a canopy for bedding plants or grass suppressed by lower branching. This is a simple operation that can instantly improve the look of the tree and its surroundings. Often a lower cost option for clients on a budget..

Crown Reduction

Crown reductions are performed as a last resort, when thinning, lifting or removal is not an option. However, not all trees are suitable for this procedure. Our qualified and experienced team will provide you with advice and recommendations to allow for a positive outcome. After being reduced a tree will generally require regular maintenance pruning or inspection to maintain a safe healthy tree.

End Weight Reduction

Used instead of a crown reduction when only selected limbs need to be reduced because of possible defects: i.e. tension and/or compression splits; or heavily laden fruit trees that cannot bear the heavy load due to borer or decay. End weight reductions with correct pruning procedures may extend the life of your tree without having to do a full reduction.

Crown Restoration

Performed if a tree has been topped/lopped or badly crown reduced. It involves removing crossing and/or rubbing branches, thinning or removing epicormic and basal growth, or poor branch unions and co-dominant stems, thereby aiding the tree to return to its natural shape and form.

Hedging

Hedging is best done little and often. This reduces the likelihood of woody cuts and an inferior finish. Regular trimming will promote thicker and more even growth with improved wind resistency. Hedges are best trimmed at least twice annually.

If your hedge is overgrown, don’t panic, we may be able to do a complete reformation (species dependent). This involves cutting the hedge back hard for the first cut to form the desired height or shape of the hedge (it may look unsightly at first). The hedge is then sloped inwards from both sides to achieve a narrow top that is easier to maintain and allows light to lower growth, aiding in a even thick surface, which with regular trims becomes easier to maintain and looks great!

If you have hedging hassles we can fix them. Contact us if you would like further information on our routine maintenance programme.

Powerline Clearance

We are Unison Approved Contractors with Close Approach Consent to work within close proximity to power lines. The minimum distance within which we can safely work is dependent on the circuit voltage, ie. 2.5m of a 33kV line, 1.5m of an 11kV line, and 0.5m of 230/400V lines. (Most residential properties have 230/400V lines).
Call us if you have received a cut and trim notice from Unison - it is likely we can help.
