Frequently Asked Questions
Questions:
Answers:
I would like to have my tree removed. Can you give me a price over the phone?
As there are so many variables to consider, eg. size of tree, proximity to buildings, powerlines, accessibility, just to name a few, and because we quote based on the time we estimate the work will take to complete, together with the resources that will be required, it is not possible for us to provide a quote without first viewing the work.
When is the best time to prune my deciduous tree?
We recommend that pruning work be carried out in the tree’s dormant phase when the leaves have fallen and when the sap flow reduces. This will help ensure that minimal stress is placed on the tree. In New Zealand this is generally between June and August (before bud burst).
My neighbour’s tree is planted close to the boundary and it drops leaves in my guttering and is also interfering with my drains. What can I do?
We recommend approaching these types of situations in a good neighbourly fashion. Often you can negotiate to have trees removed or pruned at your cost. Check out the Hastings District Council’s website (link) for useful advice in respect of trees on neighbouring properties.
Can I put fresh woodchip/mulch on my garden beds?
It is preferable to leave the woodchip to sit for at least six weeks prior to applying to garden beds. However, if applying fresh ensure that you keep the woodchip away from the root collar and add nitrogen to the plant beds.
What happens when the stumps are ground?
The grindings are shovelled back into the area of the stump and left to settle. Alternatively the grindings can be dug out and the area filled with top soil. We term this Reinstatement. There are additional costs involved.
Do I need to be home when you come to do my tree work?
Not unless it is your preference to do so. Most of our clients are working when we work so it is not always practical.
I would like a tree removed. Can you cut the wood up for use in my fireplace?
Yes, we can cut the wood to rings and these are usually approximately 300-400mm in length. You will, however need to split the wood yourself.
I would like you to prune my trees every year and trim my hedges every six months. Do I have to call to book in?
No. Just let one of our team know you would like to be added to our Routine Maintenance Programme and we’ll do the rest.
I have Privet on my property. What can I do to have this removed?
Contact Louise Hampton (835 9200) at the Hawke’s Bay Regional Council. She will visit your property to confirm the presence of privet and get you to complete an Access Permission Form. Be aware that removal will not happen immediately. There is an extensive list of properties to be attended to and the oldest enquiries are being dealt with first.
Do the Hawke’s Bay Regional Council pay for the stumps to be ground from Privet trees you remove?
Not as standard, but they may consider reimbursing a percentage of the stump grinding in some cases. You will need to make a special application. Stump grinding is often an inexpensive way to achieve a nice finish to the job. Our team can provide a quote for you at the time of removing the privet if requested.
